Importing from China to Spain: shipping, costs and customs
Spain is in the European Union, so EU customs rules apply: duties are the same in every EU country, and import VAT (IVA) is 21%.

Customs duties and taxes
- Customs duty depends on the product (EU Common Customs Tariff); most consumer goods pay between 0% and 17%.
- Import VAT (IVA) is 21% (reduced rates of 10% and 4% for some goods), calculated on the value plus shipping plus duty.
- Since 1 July 2026 the €150 duty exemption for small parcels no longer exists: low-value parcels sent to consumers pay a flat €3 per type of item. VAT has applied to every parcel since 2021.
- The Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla are outside the EU VAT area: different taxes (IGIC in the Canaries) and extra customs steps.
Rules and documents
- Business importers need an EORI number (from the Agencia Tributaria).
- Many products need CE marking and EU-compliant labels (toys, electronics, machinery); cosmetics and food have their own EU rules.
- Main ports: Valencia, Barcelona and Algeciras.
